Grout and silicone solve different problems in a shower. Grout normally fills the joints between tiles; a suitable flexible sealant is used at designated movement joints and junctions in the installed system. Before booking regrouting or resealing in Dubai, identify exactly where the joint has failed. Surface repairs are not a reliable answer to unexplained dampness behind a wall or outside the shower.

Identify the joint before choosing a service
Photograph the whole shower and take a closer picture of the affected line. A straight joint between tiles is different from a corner, the meeting point between a wall and floor, or the edge of a tray. Show the provider the location rather than describing every material as grout.
MAPEI's bathroom installation guidance distinguishes tile grout from suitable sealant at corners and edges. The specific material still depends on the installed system, substrate and product compatibility. A provider should explain those choices rather than fill every gap with whichever product is available.
Discolouration alone does not establish a waterproofing failure. Equally, a neat new surface bead does not demonstrate that concealed moisture has been resolved. The job should start with the symptom and its location, not a preset promise to reseal the entire bathroom.
Distinguish appearance from loss of integrity
Look without scraping or opening the joint. Is the material stained but intact, missing, cracked, detached from an edge or repeatedly failing in the same place? Does water appear outside the shower only during use? Is there dampness on the other side of the wall?
These are different observations. Cleaning may improve an intact surface. Missing or detached material may need replacement. Persistent dampness or loose tiles can require a broader inspection before any cosmetic work. Do not treat visible mould or a stain as proof of a single technical cause.
If the entire room becomes wet after showers, compare the symptoms with our bathroom condensation and ventilation guide. Ventilation-related moisture and a leaking joint can exist together; one explanation should not exclude the other without inspection.
When regrouting may be the wrong first job
A surface-only quote is incomplete when the provider has not considered loose tiles, repeat cracking, adjacent damp patches or the possibility of a plumbing leak. Ask how they will determine whether the surrounding assembly is sound and whether the proposed repair addresses the observed symptom.
Do not drill, remove tiles or scrape deeply into joints as a diagnostic experiment. Concealed services and the waterproofing assembly can be damaged. In a rental, obtain approval for work that changes fixed finishes. Our rental maintenance responsibility guide explains how to organise that conversation.
If moisture is spreading outside the shower or reaching electrical fittings, stop using the affected area and arrange qualified assessment. Protect the area without touching wet electrical equipment. A routine resealing appointment is not an emergency response service.
What to ask in a repair quotation
Give every provider the same photographs and description. Ask for the exact joints included, the proposed material, removal and preparation steps, protection of surrounding finishes and the required time before the shower can be used again.
- Which joints will be regrouted, and which will receive flexible sealant?
- What is the product, and is it compatible with this shower system?
- How will old material and residue be removed without damaging the surrounding installation?
- What drying or curing conditions does the product require?
- What test or inspection will be used to check the result?
- What happens if concealed damage is discovered during the work?
Do not accept a universal drying time. Products and site conditions differ; the installer should use the actual technical data sheet. Clarify whether the price includes cleaning, disposal, all agreed joints and a written service record. Our professional selection checklist helps compare complete scopes rather than headline prices.
Having the same cracked-shower-joint problem?
Submit a FIXSMART request with the joint location, photographs, when the defect appeared and any dampness outside the shower. Ask for an inspection before deciding between regrouting, resealing and a broader repair. FIXSMART is a marketplace connecting you with independent providers; confirm their relevant experience and availability directly.
Mention previous repairs and whether the fault returned in the same position. That history matters more than asking for the thickest possible bead of silicone. Do not cover an active symptom simply to make the shower look ready for handover.
Check the work before using the shower
Ask the installer to show the completed joints and explain the product-specific curing instructions. Check the agreed scope against the quotation. Keep the material name and service record so a future provider can understand what was used.
After the permitted return-to-use time, observe the original problem area during normal use. Report recurring dampness promptly. A photograph of a clean joint records appearance; it does not by itself verify the concealed waterproofing or exclude a plumbing leak.
Frequently asked questions
Can silicone replace all shower grout?
No. The installed system requires appropriate materials at the appropriate joints. Ask the provider to identify movement joints separately from tile joints.
Will regrouting fix a leak behind the tiles?
Not necessarily. Concealed waterproofing, plumbing and substrate problems require investigation. Surface work should not be sold as a guaranteed cure without diagnosis.
How soon can I use the shower after resealing?
Follow the actual product's instructions and the installer's site-specific advice. There is no single safe waiting time for every sealant.
Is stained grout always damaged?
No. Appearance and integrity are different questions. Request an assessment if there are cracks, missing material, loose tiles or persistent dampness.
